Poverty is widespread and there are 270 million Indians who don’t have enough to meet their basic needs according to World Bank Data. “Every new government comes with a promise but there’s no investment,” says Parmesh, “so jugaad isn’t a choice for many in India.” Practicing jugaad from a stable position is desirable. Practicing it from need is not. “But if you have food on the table and no one is going to throw you out for loving who you love, then jugaad is a good thing,” says Parmesh. Because in places where your basic needs are being met, jugaad can help you fly.
Fatema agrees: “If you have the basics, jugaad can help you get to the top of Maslow’s triangle. But you need the basics.” There is a cruel irony that the very Indian concept of jugaad as a philosophy for a happy, successful life works most effectively outside of India. We can all feel guilty about that. But we can also keep trying. To make the world a better place, be resilient, and keep on keeping on, jugaad style. Things won’t ever be perfect but just as the concept of the “good enough” mother has saved the sanity of half of the human race, there’s something to be said for the “good enough” attitude to life—creatively making the best of what we have. So do your best; be creative; transcend the norm; and don’t just think “outside” the box—burn it. Who needs boxes, anyway?
